School Board Meeting Tonight 12/19

There is a School Board meeting tonight, December 19, 2012.

Candidates for interim appointment to the Woodbridge seat on the school board will be speaking tonight. Candidate names and application’s are not available on the PWCS site.

Other than that, there is only one item on the calendar that appears interesting – the 2013 – 2014 School Year Calendar.

Lisa Bell (Neabsco) asked why the proposed calendar had elementary students out on Monday January 27 for a teacher workday, back in school on Tuesday January 28, and then out for a half day on Wednesday January 29 for parent teacher conferences. As there wasn’t really a strong reason for that schedule, I’d suggest that the calendar be changed so that the half day for conferences in on Tuesday.

Next year PWCS will start classes on Tuesday September 3 – the Tuesday after Labor Day. Parents of younger students probably don’t realize this, but the AP & IB exams are given on set dates across the nation, so when we start 2 – 3 weeks after everyone else, our kids have 2 -3 fewer weeks of instruction time to prepare for those exams. That puts our kids at a disadvantage compared with other kids across the US and in Virginia and, once the exams are over, has them twiddling their thumbs for as much as 1 – 2 months.

Both Loudoun and Fauquier start before Labor Day, and they’re adjacent to PWC, so the VA DOE would need a good reason for denying PWCS’ application (or PWCS would need a good reason for not requesting a waiver).

So, while I recognize that this won’t affect next year’s schedule, I would like someone to ask whether the school division applied for a wavier from the VA DOE to be allowed to open before Labor Day. If the application for a wavier was denied or if PWCS didn’t apply, I’d like to know why.

If you want to read the agenda go to PWCS.edu, click on Leadership then click on electronic school board. When the Electronic School Board page launches click on the Agenda List on the right hand side of the page. Once that page launches make sure the drop down list at the top of the page reads “All Future Meetings” then find the line for Dec 19 2012, which should be at the top of the list, and click on it.

I know Delegates have said that the state needs those tourism revenues that having off a few extra weeks in the summer provides, especially around Labor Day. Teens working at many of those tourism spots, which is unfortunate, because it seems to favor capital over education. However, one of the Delegates told us last year at a town hall, of sorts, that much of that tourism money goes back to the schools. As the state is very strapped for money in recent years, and asking the county’s for more and more money, this is not a small concern. Maybe Loudoun and Fairfax wouldn’t have been approved if they hadn’t asked years early, but we will never know. On the other hand, if tests were later in the year, I don’t know when teachers could get to the other curriculum that is not on the exams, but is still required by the state curriculum. In AP classes those curriculums don’t always align well.

I’d like to have the Dept of Ed justify why Fauquier and Loudoun are allowed to open before Labor Day but Prince William is not. If state tourism revenue from those last weeks before Labor day are that to our state’s fiscal health, then why allow any county in Virginia to open before Labor Day? I think the public deserves to hear the reasons from our elected officials, no from speculation.

And if PWCS hasn’t bothered to apply because it would be too hard, then we deserve to know that as well.
