The PWC SB approved extending the day at all PWC Schools by 10 minutes. The change will begin on Monday May 10 and continue through the end of the school year.
District officials did apologize for failing to realize that our kids needed to make up time. As has become par for the course with the PWC school district, district officials simply assumed every school had sufficient hours and did nothing until it was too late.
When a parent finally notified the SB that some schools would not meet the 990 hour mandate, the district then spent 2 weeks contacting each school in the district to determine their bell schedules. With over 25 staff in the accountability office alone, that’s rather shocking.
The state, recognizing that the storms this winter might cause problems for districts, allowed districts to apply for waivers against meeting the 990 hour mandate. Fairfax applied for a received such a waiver. But, because PWCS ignored, delayed, and moved at the glacial pace it always does, the deadline for applying for a waiver against meeting the 990 mandate passed and the only option left was cancel memorial day, extend the school year a day, or extend the school day by 10 – 15 minutes.
Stupidity like this is why PWCS is increasingly becoming the laughing stock of Northern Virginia.
