Grade 3 2008 PWCS SOL Results

PWCS Grade 3 Math SOL test results from Spring 2008 were far from stellar but they were also far from terrible. Overall pass rates were unchanged both in the county and relative to the state.

But that doesn’t provide much information, and PWCS officials have been notably silent on the DOE sub-group performance – a topic which the county has, at least in the past, touted as one of their greatest achievements.

What do the numbers tell us?

They tell us that in PWC pass rates for Blacks improved while rates Overall and for Whites were unchanged.  Pass rates in every other subgroup declined.

They tell us that, relative to the state, the only subgroup which is improving in PWC is Blacks.  PWC Overall and Whites are unchanged, relative to the state.  Every other subgroup is declining in PWC relative to the state.

The details supporting this are below.

Grade 3 PWC 2008 SOL Pass Rates:

  • Overall pass rates were unchanged at 90 in both 2008 and 2007.
  • Pass rates for Males were down 1 to 89.
  • Pass rates for Females were down 1 to 90.
  • Pass Rates for Blacks were up 2 to 84.
  • Pass rates for Whites were unchanged at 95.
  • Pass rates for Hispanics were down 3 to 84.
  • Pass rates for Asians were down 1 to 95.
  • Pass rates for American Indians were down 7 to 87.
  • Pass rates for Other were down 1 to 92.
  • Pass rates for Disadvantaged students were down 2 to 81.
  • Pass Rates for Limited English Profic. students were down 3 to 83.

Grade 3 Statewide 2008 SOL Pass Rates

    • Overall pass rates were unchanged at 89 statewide.
    • Pass rates for Males were unchanged at 89 statewide.
    • Pass rates for Females were unchanged at 89 statewide.
    • Pass Rates for Blacks were unchanged at 81 statewide.
    • Pass rates for Whites were unchanged at 83 statewide.
    • Pass rates for Hispanics were down 2 to 82 statewide.
    • Pass rates for Asians were unchanged at 95 statewide.
    • Pass rates for American Indians were up 1 to 89 statewide.
    • Pass rates for Other were up 1 to 90 statewide.
    • Pass rates for Disadvantaged students were unchanged at 81 statewide.
    • Pass Rates for LEP students were down 1 to 82 statewide.

Details for each AYP subgroup performance relative to the state are:

      • PWC continues to outperform the state overall.
      • Girls in PWC continue to outperform the state, however, the margin between the state and PWC for girls has narrowed to 1 point (from 2 points).
      • Boys in PWC no longer outperform the state.
      • Blacks in PWC have continued to improve their performance relative to the state.
      • Performance for Whites in PWC relative to the state is unchanged.
      • Performance for Hispanics declined both in PWC and the state, however, PWC declined at a larger rate than the state.   As a result the margin between PWC and the statewide average has narrowed to 1 point (from a margin of 3 points).
      • Performance for Asians declined in PWC but was unchanged statewide ; as a result Asian students in PWC are now performing at the same level as statewide average for their subgroup.
      • American Indians took a big hit in PWC, but as a group statewide they increased slightly.  Whereas in the past American Indians in PWC outperformed that statewide average for their subgroup by 6 points, now they are performing lower than the statewide average for their subgroup by 2 points.
      • Disadvantaged students in PWC used to outperform the statewide average by a 2 point margin.  With the declines in pass rates in PWC for Disadvantaged students, these students in PWC are now performing at the same level as the statewide average for their subgroup.
      • LEP students in PWC continue to outperform the statewide average for their subgroup.  However, the decline in PWC was more pronounced than the decline statewide and the margin between the statewide average and PWC has decreased to 1 point (from a margin of 3 points).
